Research Direction: Model Authenticity Guarantees
Anticipating the societal response to seemingly conscious AI (e.g., conducting empirical studies to assess whether people reject computational functionalism)
Studying expert views on AI consciousness/welfare and related issues. (e.g., see Futures with Digital Minds Report)
Investigating risks, opportunities, and governance strategies for a world with both humans and digital minds
For additional ideas, see tinyurl.com/ssdigitalminds (slightly outdated)
What I'm looking for in a Mentee
If you're interested in conducting empirical studies, it is important that you already have relevant research experience (e.g., experimental design, statistical analysis). This requirement does not apply to non-empirical work.
Bio
I am an Assistant Professor in the Social Science of AI at the University of Cambridge. My research focuses on the intersection of psychology, ethics, and artificial intelligence. Previously, I studied judgment and decision-making biases in the context of global catastrophic risk, the psychology of effective altruism, and moral attitudes toward animals.
