Research Direction: Chinese AI Governance

A non-exhaustive list of research ideas: 

Chinese AI development deep dive: Identify the key AI development trends and directions that Chinese companies are focusing on by better describing their product offerings, roadmap, funding structure and business models.

Understanding Chinese corporate AI safety: Map the structure of safety teams in Chinese AI labs and understand what people mean by specific AI terms through developer outreach. 

Embodied AI primer: Analyze how Chinese labs and policy bodies are thinking about “embodied AI,” what it is, and what its Western parallels are. 

Cloud compute restrictions: What impact would US restrictions on Chinese access to cloud computing have on Chinese AI development?

What I'm looking for in a Mentee

I’m looking for fast learners with good communication skills and a willingness to ask questions. Mandarin knowledge is a plus but not mandatory. I’m excited to help mentees develop their research skills and find their niche in the field.

Bio

Emmie Hine is a Research Fellow at the Safe AI Forum focusing on AI safety and governance in China. She has studied and researched at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Bologna, and Yale Digital Ethics Center; her past work analyzed AI governance from local to international levels, often with a comparative approach. Before starting her PhD, she was a software engineer and as a result, her favorite language is TypeScript.
